Description

The Flag of the Russian Federation is a tricolor flag consisting of three equal horizontal fields: white on the top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom. Adopted on August 22, 1991, it is one of the most recognizable symbols of Russia.

The colors of the flag are often interpreted symbolically:

  • White is said to represent nobility and frankness.

  • Blue symbolizes faithfulness, honesty, impeccability, and chastity.

  • Red stands for courage, generosity, and love.

Historically, this tricolor design has roots in the late 17th century, particularly associated with Peter the Great, and was widely used for Russian merchant ships. It served as the official flag of the Russian Empire from 1883 until the 1917 October Revolution, after which it was replaced by the red flag of the Soviet Union. Its re-adoption in 1991 marked a significant moment in modern Russian history, symbolizing a return to pre-revolutionary traditions and a new era for the country.

Color

The Russian flag is described in the Federal Constitutional Law No. 1-FKZ of December 25, 2000, "On the State Flag of the Russian Federation." However, the law only specifies the colors—white, blue, and red—without detailing specific shades or color codes. This means there are no officially legislated CMYK, Pantone, RGB, or HEX values. In practice, state bodies use recommended color codes that have become standard for flag production and official symbols.
